Unlike most people, celebrities tend to choose their dogs solely on the looks. And the ability to fit in the handbag! Though there are numerous celebrities out there who choose their dogs for the right reasons, not just looks. So, Celebrities, here’s a quick guide on how to choose the “correct” small dog, or Diva Dog:
Size
In general a small dog is considered to be one who weighs less than 10kgs (22lbs) or who is shorter than 40cm (16 inches). Some of the small dogs favoured by Celebrities tend to be lighter and shorter than this and a few pick dogs that are a little heavier and taller – though most are small or middle-ish!
Some breeds, such as the Chihuahua, are the smallest of the small… weighing in at only 3-4kgs (6-8lbs) and standing only 15-20cms (6-10 inches) tall. While the larger breeds like the Staffordshire Bull Terrier weigh 12-18kgs (24-36lbs)24 to 36 pounds and stand around 30-45cm (12-18inches) tall.
So, celebrities, your 1st choice is to decide if you want a really small dog such as the Chihuahua or something a bit bigger, such as a Staffordshire Bull Terrier – a real “current” breed, especially if you’re a bit of a naughty boy/girl!
Trainability
As with all dogs, small breeds can be trained to learn commands; however, some learn faster than others. A fast learning breed is much easier to train and will know more commands in a shorter period of time. While a slower learning breed requires more patience and time to train. Moulting / Shedding
Some small dogs moult/shed very little hair. These shed so little that you’ll be unlucky to find a single hair in your home. If you hate dog hair and don’t have time for vacuuming, then one of these breeds is right for you.
Some other breeds shed a bit of har – not much, but you’ll find it around the home on the carpet, on clothes etc. If you don’t mind a little hair in your home like this, then you have a wider variety of breeds to choose from.
Then there are the breeds that seem to leave more hair around the home, than they have on their bodies! If you own one of these, you’ll find hair everywhere and on everything in your home. Carpets, sofa, and clothes and probably even on the kitchen table and in the fridge. It gets everywhere! But if hair doesn’t bother you, then you have the widest selection of breeds to choose from.
Low Maintenance
Small dog maintenance comes down to two things: brushing and vacuuming. Some breeds are almost maintenance-free and only require an occasional brushing and don’t drop virtually any hair so you don’t have to vacuum.
With a long-haired dog you’ll need to brush them daily so their coat doesn’t become a matted and tangled mess! However, you can avoid this if you keep his coat clipped short. So you aren’t limited to just the short-haired breeds if you don’t have time for regular brushing. You still can choose a longhaired breed; you just have to clip the coat short to make it easy to maintain.
